Varanadi Kashayam is one of the well-known decoctions of the Kerala tradition, and Sitaram Ayurveda presents it in tablet form for ease of daily use. Prepared in the classical manner and backed by the company's heritage since 1921, these tablets carry a long-standing herbal formula into a convenient modern format.
What are Varanadi Kashayam tablets?
The tablets are made from the classical decoction known as Varanadi Kashayam (a traditional herbal decoction), a blend of South Indian botanicals traditionally including Varuna (Crataeva religiosa), Saireyaka (Strobilanthes ciliatus), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) and Dahana (Plumbago zeylanica), among others. Compressing the concentrated decoction into a tablet makes it straightforward to include the preparation in a daily routine.
The classical Ayurvedic view
Classical texts describe the Varanadi blend in relation to Kapha and Vata (two of the three Doshas, the bio-energetic principles of Ayurveda). It is spoken of as Kapha-hara, a classical term for qualities that counter the heaviness and slowness associated with Kapha, and it is linked in tradition with Agni (the digestive fire). In the Kerala texts the formula is connected with the sense of lightness and steadiness that Ayurveda regards as signs of a well-balanced Kapha. These are traditional concepts of balance, not statements about health.
Traditional use and Pathya
For everyday use the tablets are usually taken with lukewarm water, traditionally about an hour before meals. Consistency matters in Ayurveda, so many practitioners suggest fitting them into morning and evening rituals. Classical practice also stresses Pathya (a supportive diet): favouring warm, light, well-spiced and easily digested meals such as vegetable soups and cooked grains, while easing back on heavy, oily or very cold foods. Regular, moderate movement is a common companion recommendation.
