Anu Thailam (a herbal oil) from Sitaram Ayurveda is a classical Nasya oil, a preparation traditionally applied to the nasal passages. It is known for its multi-herb composition, in which a sesame-oil base is processed with a large number of classical herbs for the subtle care of the head and neck region. Sitaram has prepared such oils in Kerala since 1921. This is a preparation for external use only.

How the oil is made

The traditional method makes decoctions and pastes of the herbs, then slowly cooks them with sesame oil and other liquids until only the oil remains. This unhurried process is designed to carry both the water-soluble and the oil-soluble qualities of the herbs into the base. The care it demands reflects the high regard the texts hold for Nasya oils such as Anu Thailam.

Classical roles of the herbs

While ingredient lists vary between houses, the herbs of Anu Thailam are traditionally associated in the texts with:

  • The clarity of the senses of the head.
  • A feeling of comfort across the forehead and face.
  • Gentle warmth to the channels of the head.
  • Settling Vata and Kapha in the head and neck.

Some herbs are aromatic and warming, others cooling and soothing, others nourishing. The classical intent is an oil that is neither too heavy nor too light, well suited to moderate, guided use, since the nasal tissues are delicate and respond best to well-proportioned preparations.

A place in a holistic routine

Anu Thailam traditionally belongs to a wider Dinacharya (daily routine) of head and sense care that may also include gentle self-massage of the head and shoulders, unhurried mornings and time in fresh air. It is most in keeping with tradition when used calmly and consistently, under the guidance of a qualified practitioner, rather than only at moments of need.

How is Nasya oil traditionally applied?

In the classical texts, a small measured quantity is applied to the nostrils, often after a warm bath and in an unhurried setting. Follow the label and, where possible, the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. For external use only.
